Srinagar, Jul 05 (KNO): The Election Commission of India (ECI) will review preparedness for special summary revision of electoral rolls with the district election officers (DEOs) of Jammu & Kashmir on July 10. Ahead of the beginning of the special summary revision of electoral rolls, the poll-body has convened a meeting with all 20 district election officers of the Union Territory to discuss the issues relating to the exercise, which will begin on July 25 and culminate on August 20. As per the letter written by joint chief electoral officer to DEOs, a copy of which is in possession of news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), the meeting would discuss vacancies of electoral registration officers and assistant electoral registration officers, status of appointment of booth level officers, status of house-to-house verification by BLOs, rationalization/rearrangement of polling stations, health of electoral roll, removal of discrepancies in electoral roll and readiness for preparation of integrated draft electoral roll. The commission will also discuss the issues raised by political parties during their meetings with the district election officers (DEOs). On June 20, the poll-body had ordered a special summary revision of electoral rolls in the Union Territory. On December 11 last year, the Supreme Court had directed the Election Commission of India to hold assembly elections in Jammu & Kashmir by September 30. On June 20, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had said that preparations have begun for assembly polls in Jammu & Kashmir. "The people of Jammu and Kashmir elect their representatives at the local level, through them you find ways to solve problems, what can be better than this? Therefore, now the preparations for the Assembly elections have also started. The time is not far when you will elect the new government of Jammu and Kashmir with your votes. That day will also come soon when Jammu and Kashmir will once again make its future better as a state," he had said—(KNO)
